I Downloaded Pokémon Go, Now What?

Congratulations for joining the wonderful Pokémon world that so many others have joined. The very first thing you will be prompted to do is to either sign in with your Google account or make a Pokémon Trainer ID. Neither of them have an advantage so I recommend doing whatever you prefer! After having made an account, you will then have the opportunity to customize your own avatar!

This is the character that you will see roaming around on the map and what your character will look like for the rest of your time in the game. Here, you have the opportunity to change almost everything about your character from their hair color to the shoes they are wearing.

After having made your very own character, you will then be introduced to the professor who is going to accompany you on this journey. You will go through some dialogue and then be prompted to pick your very own starter! You will see all three starter Pokémon on the map with your character and must choose which one you wish to start off with by clicking on it.

There is actually an Easter Egg that allows you to get a Pikachu as your starter! To do this, you simply walk away from the other 3 starters and a Pikachu will pop up on your screen! Choosing your starter does not have a significant impact on the game as you will have the chance to catch every Pokémon in the game by simply walking around.

Navigating the Menus of Pokémon Go!

Like any game, it is extremely important to have a good understanding of the menus and what everything means. The majority of your time will be spent navigating these menus, so it is important to understand what you can expect in each one. In order to get to the menu selection, you must tap on the Poké Ball in the center of the screen, then you will see 4 different icons that pop up. The Pokémon tab has all of the Pokémon you have captured thus far stored here.

You can also tap on the Eggs tab that will show you how close you are to hatching your eggs! Eggs are randomly given to you at Pokéstops, the above mentioned icons on your map! There are three tiers of eggs that can be found at Poké Stops, 2 KM, 5 KM, and 10 KM. The number determines how far you have to walk in order to hatch the egg. Each tier of egg hatches something different, and the 10 kilometer eggs hatch Pokémon that are rarer than the other ones.

The Shop icon will bring you to the shop! Here you can purchase an assortment of different items for Poké Coins, the premium currency that is featured in this game. Players can also receive coins by defending a gym, but that is not something that you will have to worry about for a while!

The Pokédex tab will bring you to your Pokédex. This will show you how many Pokémon you have seen and how many of them you have caught. In order to be the ultimate Pokémon trainer, you will have to catch them all!

The Items tab will bring you to your items! Items are received whenever you level up, or by visiting Poké Stops. There is a limit to how many items you can have at one time, so it is important to make sure you are not getting near the limit whenever you are out and about.
