Top Games Inc. is a company which despite its pompous name has just been released a title – Evony: The King’s Return. The game is a strategy one and it is available on both Android and Apple devices having an average rating of 4.0 out of 5 on both platforms already in 2016. It has been downloaded for approximately half a million times and it requires iOS 8.0 or Android 2.3 in order to run in optimal parameters.
Evony is a land divided by long lasting wars during gameplay in 2016. It is your turn to try and forge an alliance which will later will battle for supremacy. Being a strategy title available on the Google Play Store, you will have to fulfill a lot of roles such as the Diplomat or the Governor. Your time has come and you should start building your kingdom as soon as possible because the enemies are already doing it.
The game doesn’t require any prior sign-up meaning that you will be able to play it as a guest for 2016. However, if you are an Android user and you have Google Play Services installed (which you probably do), your in-game account will automatically link with your Google account. This linking will ensure no data loss in case of switching devices or losing any saved stuff. As an alternative, you can link your Facebook account with Evony: The King’s Return one.
One of the things that people always appreciate in a strategy game is the abundance of microtransactions in 2016. Evony: The King’s Return is no exception having dozens of those. Thankfully they are all focused on only one resource – Gems. You can use this premium resource to hire new workers, to buy additional resources, to buy utility items and to instantly build stuff. The price starts from $4.99 which will grant you no less than 100 units and goes up to $99.99 which will be exchanged for 25,000 Gems. Of course, there a lot of offers in-between.
Cheats & Tips for Evony: The King’s Return
- Follow the questline for a balanced in-game progression. Don’t rush your keep because it is worthless in the beginning.
- Join an alliance as soon as possible. You will get free gems (one time only) and you will be able to move your city next to your team for no costs.
- When part of an alliance make sure you donate stuff and you aid teammates with their buildings. They will definitely do the same for you so it’s a win-win situation.
- You only have one worker so when you plan on expanding and build a lot of stuff you should probably hire another. The cost will be 300 Gems but you will have an extra building slot for three days.
- Be aware of your Academy and the fact that you have a very stuffy research tree. Your academy should always train something.
- There are some daily quests that should definitely be checked out and as often as possible completed. By doing so you will always get a lot of items that will come in-handy sooner or later.
- Your character has a personal skill tree (Talents) and can also equip items. Try to always get the right equipment in order to boost your overall strength.
- The troops will consume food if they are idle so try to send them away to farm, scout or attack.
- At your gate there will be from time to time a trader that will offer you some random loot. Make sure you claim it because usually it will turn out to be something really valuable.
- Check the Event Center. Besides the limited offers there are a lot of rewards and challenges than can be claimed or completed.
Evony: The King’s Return Review
Do you remember when I talked about the fact that I feel like the developers stopped publishing strategy games? Looks like I was wrong because Evony: The King’s Return is the third I’ve played in the last weeks. If you’re interested about its potential start reading below.
The complexity of strategy games is always a joy to behold and it may seem odd that I’ve chosen this as I highlight but that’s the truth – Evony: The King’s Return may not excel in originality (we’ll talk about this later) but the overall atmosphere is really great. The developers used all their resources to create a balanced environment for both experienced and inexperienced players, they added a lot of themed events and everything is team-oriented.
To achieve this they used a pretty decent translator (so you will be able to communicate with players who don’t speak your language) and a lot of in-game languages. Maybe I was just lucky but because of this I’ve met only friendly players that will help you if you ask. Another great thing about Evony: The King’s Return is that it has some interesting new elements regarding the battling system – you can split your troops into teams that will be led by a general and not your actual character. It may not seem much but try to coordinate an attack with only one big army and you will see what I’m talking about.
One last thing that I appreciate about Evony: The King’s return is something that in a civilized world would be very common – the game has an active support team. You will not always agree with their methods but those people are really trying to help their players and I hope that they will keep doing it no matter how big the player base will grow (which it will probably happen at some point).
Talking about a strategy title, there will also obviously be a lot of things that are pretty bad regarding Evony: The King’s Return but I’ve managed to come up with a list that will summarize everything that needs to be known immediately. First of all, if you played another strategy game then you basically played this one as well. The idea is the same, the layout is pretty much the same and with the exceptions of some new elements you will play the same old classical city builder. And that’s a bad thing because people are getting tired of playing the same thing over and over again and this will eventually backfire (not necessary on Evony: The King’s Return).
The second important issue I have encountered in Evony: The King’s Return is probably the weird tutorial. I don’t know if I’ve experienced a bug but if I didn’t, the tutorial made no sense – You start building a farm and a barracks and then you are left on your own. If you join the Kingdom View, the tutorial will start again and will urge you to do things but that can happen after you reached another level. The continuity is lacking and that’s really bad. The third and the last not-so-great thing about Evony: The King’s Return that we will talk about is definitely the fact that stats, total powers, kills and prestige don’t upgrade instantly. It may seem a superficial issue but for some players it really matters that they’re stats are always updated and this should definitely be solved as soon as possible.
Overall, Evony: The King’s Return is a game I would probably recommend. This title clearly has a lot of flaws but if you have the ability to see through them you will soon discover one of the most balanced strategy games on the market and that’s a good thing.
Evony: The King’s Return Ratings
Artwork: Evony: The King’s Return gets a rating of 8 out of 10 at this department. Despite the low hardware requirements, the artwork and the graphics are pretty impressive for a strategy title. You have a nice palette of colors and the models look modern enough while matching the medieval theme of the game. The design of the troops is pretty interesting as well but don’t expect anything out of the ordinary. There are also some animation effects but they are as basic as they can be so we will not get into any details.
Music & SFX: I give Evony: The King’s Return a rating of 7 out of 10 for its music and sound effects. One of the most underrated things in a strategy mobile game and obviously in this particular title is the soundtrack. I don’t know why the developers consider this just a stuff that needs to be done because players will not have expectations. The soundtrack of the game is dull and it doesn’t create an interesting atmosphere. Also, the sound effects are almost non-existent and they don’t make an impact in any way.
Story/Originality: Evony: The King’s Return scores 6 out of 10 at this section. It is time to bash the game. As I already mentioned, the main issue of this title is the originality. Theoretically Evony is an old-school web-based online game so it isn’t a copy of anything. Practically, the game is similar with any other strategy title on the market and the developers clearly got their inspiration from those titles. There are some new mechanics that bring new stuff to the table but unfortunately it is not enough. Also, the story has potential but for some reason, it is dropped very fast and you will never hear anything about it again.
General Gameplay: I give Evony: The King’s Return a rating of 8 out of 10 for its general gameplay. One of the most balanced strategy titles on the market has one small but potentially troublemaking problem – the tutorial is very random and it may scare people. If you get past it, you will discover a very neat user interface, simple yet interesting game mechanics and almost no in-game bugs. Add to this a support team and no ads and you got yourself a more than decent title. Also, for the time I’ve played Evony: The King’s Return I didn’t had any crashes or freezes so at least there’s that.
Addictiveness: The game scores a 9 out of 10 for its addictiveness. The department where Evony: The King’s Return gets the highest rating is this for obvious reasons. I recently mentioned the great atmosphere of this specific game and that exists because there is a lot of stuff to do besides the usual ‘build stuff and wait for it to be completed’. The alliance implementation is really good and you can make friends from all over the world, there are dozens of solo and team events to keep you busy, you are rewarded for your loyalty with different bonuses and daily rewards and you can approach different strategies and still come out on top. What do you want more?
Overall, Evony: The King’s Return gets a rating of 7.6 out of 10. The game can be a challenger for the big traditional strategy titles but only if the developers constantly update stuff and bring new elements to the table. Until then it is just an above average city-builder that you may or may not enjoy.
